Really Sloppy Joes


1 pound lean ground beef
1 medium onion
2/3 cup ketchup
¼ cup water
1 tablespoon vinegar (any kind)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
6 drops hot pepper sauce
4 hamburger buns, toasted

I just noticed that our toaster oven says "Toast-R-Oven." How embarrassing for it.


Brown the beef in a large frying pan over medium-high heat for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently at first to break the meat into small clumps. 

Be careful if you go really lean with the meat, because the leaner it is the faster it burns.


If the beef seems like it’s starting to burn, turn the heat down to medium. It’s not necessary to add oil since even the leanest beef has fat in it. Carefully drain the fat into an empty can and discard.

While the beef is browning, peel the onion and chop it into ¼-inch pieces. After the fat has been drained off, add the onion to the beef. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring frequently.

Despite the title, these are shaping up to be pretty tidy sloppy joes. 


Add the ketchup, water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder and hot pepper sauce and cook, uncovered, over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. 

Our joes had a little extra kick to them because we used jalapeno ketchup!


Add up to ¼ cup more water if the mixture seems too dry. It should be thick and juicy rather than watery.

So find that juicy double. Mix-a-Lot's in trouble.



Spoon one-quarter of the mixture into each bun half, top with the other half and serve like a burger. Or, if you don’t want to get your hands sloppy, open the buns flat and spoon one-eighth of the mixture on each bun half and eat with a fork. Repeat with the remaining buns. 

Served up with some nice broccoli for an attractive and satisfying meal.
