Dining Out: Jackie's Family Restaurant (Gas City, IN)

We walked in to find a healthy crowd of locals enjoying the place.

Exterior: 2/5

Just off the main drag in Gas City, the restaurant has a plain, unassuming red wood-siding exterior. Honestly I might have totally missed it if my partner hadn't found it on Google maps and led the way when we were looking for a place to sit down and eat during a festival.

Ambience: 2/5

Ha!

The vibe was very mid-century kitsch, featuring wood-paneled walls and homey wallpaper accented with bumper-sticker-esque one-liner signs. The silverware didn't exactly match, which made for a fun game with my kid finding the differences in the patterns. Honestly, all of that was charming if not conventionally attractive. That said, the charm evaporated when I went to the restroom at the end of the meal. They had one-seater bathrooms and I ended up having to use the men's because someone had taken up semi-permanent residence in the women's. The experience was downright icky and I doused myself in hand sanitizer immediately after sitting back down at the table.

Variety: 2/5

Pancakes with syrup. No frills, just fluffy batter.

Jackie's had your conventional family-restaurant breakfast and lunch staples with a couple of daily specials mixed in. I couldn't pinpoint any kind of signature dish or local specialty involved. It was kind of like going into an American Chinese restaurant and seeing all the same things you'd see at any other American Chinese restaurant, except instead of noodles and chicken it was pancakes and sandwiches.

Quality: 3/5

I didn't know what to say when the waitstaff put this in front of me.

Now this dish was pretty *chef's kiss.

I'm giving a three for quality because it was VERY hit-or-miss depending on the dish you got. I was torn with my omelet because the biscuits that came with it were warm, fluffy, and delicious but the omelet itself was gooey with American cheese, and not in a good way. The menu hadn't specified what sort of cheese I was getting and I didn't expect Kraft singles. That said, my kid's pancakes were fluffy and nice and my husband got the breakfast special, banana French toast, and it was jaw-droppingly amazing. I guess you have to know what to order here.

Kid-Friendly: 5/5

One happy kiddo.

I have to hand it to them, because they didn't bat an eye when I ordered a bowl of dry Cheerios for the baby. She and her brother were perfectly peachy happy to be eating there.

Would Eat Again?: Red Light

Unfortunately no. I tried to keep an open mind about this place, because I never want to become so food-snobby that I can't enjoy a classic small-town joint like this. But then the Kraft singles happened. And then the bathroom happened. So thanks for the good French toast, Jackie's, but we'll leave it for other folks to enjoy.
