For all you Symphony junkies out there, here are a few prize quotations heard from my perspective in the middle of the audience at the LSU Philharmonia's Viva Vivaldi! concert tonight. They're worth a laugh, regardless of your musical background, but even more so if you can muster some Brahmsian pretense and knowing chuckle.
The "Afficianado" Trying to Impress a Date: "I mean... I really like Yo-Yo Ma... I've always really enjoyed his renditions... of... stuff."
The Casual Music Student: "I don't understand why the conductors always come out for more clapping. If I become a conductor, I will never come back out."
The University Administrator: "When's the conductor coming out? I was on his search committee, I hired that guy. When's he going to come out? I'm here to see him! Ah! Finally! He's doing this number! Great!" [claps enthusiastically]
The Armchair Music Snob: "Is this going to be the Vivaldi piece that goes bongbongbongbongBONGBONGBONGBONG?"
For the record, I know of no Vivaldi piece that goes BONGBONGBONGBONG. If any more informed musicians out there would like to expand my knowledge base, please feel free.
