6 medium
apples, such as Jonathan or Pink Lady
½ cup
maple syrup
1/3 cup
water
1
teaspoon lemon juice
2
(1-inch) strips lemon peel
¼
teaspoon ground cinnamon
Dash
salt
2
tablespoons butter
6 to 12
soft candy worms
Preheat oven to 350F. Core apples, being careful not to cut
through to bottom. Peel top 1/3 of apple. Stand apples in baking pan.
Combine maple syrup, water, lemon juice, lemon peel, cinnamon
and salt in small saucepan. Bring to a boil. Pour mixture over apples.
We doubled the recipe for a potluck, as you can tell. |
Cover
loosely with foil.
Bake 30 minutes. Remove from oven. Place 1 teaspoon butter
into core of each apple. Baste apples with pan juices; cover and bake 15
minutes or until tender. Cool.
Cut 1 or 2 small holes from outside of apple through to the
core.
Matt used the apple corer to do this, which was quite effective. |
Thread worms halfway through the holes.
Zzzooop! |
Serve warm or cold.
And they're wormy! |
My Rating: 3/5 "These are just cute and fun and silly and otherwise a good time. The syrup glaze on them is quite tasty. The only hangup with them is that they don't keep very long, and the baking process makes the remainder of the peel get kind of squishy. But they get bonus points for novelty!"
