Dining Out: Stoney's Sourdough Pizza Co. (Kokomo, IN)

They've done a nice job of branding themselves in a way that fits their vibe

Exterior: 4/5

I wish the sign wasn't busted, because I bet it was a cool sign

The mural on the side of the building transforms it and draws wonderful attention

Stoney's occupies half of a building otherwise taken up by a convenience store on the corner of Alto Road and Southway Boulevard in Kokomo. The area is mostly residential, but it's on the way to more commercial stuff like Lowe's and the other 931 businesses. The building itself wasn't anything spectacular to begin with, but the Stoney's proprietor has a great aesthetic vision for the place that welcomes you with a fun mural on their side of the property. The only reason I'm not giving the exterior a 5/5 is that at the time of this writing the sign needed to be replaced. Other than that, beautiful. It really makes you wonder what's inside.

Ambience: 4/5

The muralness continues inside

There's seating, but it's more like "wait to pick up your order" seating

Since Stoney's business is primarily take-out there's not a lot of reason to make the inside a thrill-a-minute experience. But they still kept their vibe going, and I loved the attention to detail reflected in that choice. The decor and signage is consistent with the aesthetic established by the mural outside.

Variety: 3/5

Spinach Artichoke Dip Cheese Bread

The Stoney's menu isn't extensive, but it is relatively interesting. They your usual pizza topping staples, but their specialties include some interesting stuff like Chicken Pesto and Pickle-Bacon-Ranch. We tried the Spinach Artichoke Dip Cheese Bread appetizer and enjoyed the novelty there. The draw here is quality, though, not variety.

Quality: 5/5

White Pizza

THE SOURDOUGH CRUST IS SO GOOD. It has a wonderful consistency and a flavor that's robust but doesn't crowd out the flavors of the toppings. We ordered one of their White Pizzas and I think my eyes rolled back in my head when I took my first bite. It was that good. We've ordered from Stoney's previously and gotten their Garlic Parm Bites, which were also amaaaaaaazing. This is definitely my favorite local pizza place I've tried since moving back to Kokomo.

Kid-Friendly: 5/5

Cheese Pizza

There's cheese pizza here and you take it home where your kids can wreak as much havoc as you normally let them wreak without annoying other customers. It's a win-win. Now they also make kid-size individual pizzas that you can personalize with whatever sauce and/or topping your kid enjoys. For our family, which includes a picky 5YO and a 1YO with an enormous appetite, just getting a regular small cheese pizza is the way to go. I think the kids were able to tell this was good quality stuff, because they actually wanted to eat the crust!

Would Eat Again?: Green Light

Yep, this is good. Good crust, nice balances of flavors on the specialty dishes, overall just wonderful pizza craftsmanship. Sometimes you just want takeout, and Stoney's gives you that freedom and makes your food quickly and efficiently. If the quality is so good that even a five-year-old can tell there's something special about what they're eating then this place is doing something very right. (I should put in one request, though, because a friend of mine said they used to do really good salads that are no longer on the menu. I like salad and would eat it if they sold it. But I'll still eat that amazing pizza.)
