Dining Out: Markle's Pancake House (Markle, IN)

You know it's a legit "Family Restaurant" when the menu looks like this

 Exterior: 4/5

Cute!

The pancake house is in a quiet little storefront that blends in well with its surroundings. In a town of about 1,000 people I'm assuming most places are walkable, so I hope folks take advantage of the accessibility of this place and the rest of the downtown. The building itself wasn't impressive, but the signage did a good job of complementing the facade without upstaging it.

Ambience: 4/5

Hobby Lobby kitsch decor

Visiting the Pancake House in December meant getting treated to an onslaught of fun-tacky Christmas decor that gave the place a lively feel. Kitsch aside, the interior was pleasant and calming, which is good because the place was absolutely packed when we walked in and there was considerable hubbub. But it all felt fun and we took Saturday lunch crowd as a testament to the quality of the experience.

Variety: 4/5

I'm always happy to see apple butter on offer!

It's hard to tell from our orders (below), but the menu does have a lot of different sorts of food and also has a variety of options within each genre. I wound up getting an Irish Skillet with corned beef and Swiss cheese and really nice hashbrowns (that I forgot to take a picture of) but there were a variety of others rooted in different cuisines. Even within the breakfasty-food options there was stuff to satisfy a variety of palates: Benedicts, frittatas, sandwiches, omelets, scrambles, and your usual sorts of brunch platters. There's lots going on here!

Quality: 4/5

The vibe here is really homey, and you get home-cooked quality food. Don't come looking for haute cuisine, but if you want to get the wholesome excitement that comes with eating sweet baked goods piled mile-high with whipped cream then this is a great spot. They're just adventurous enough to be interesting while sticking to their roots, so they're a nice experience for both a small-town audience and for folks like us who need a place to stop while driving up I-69. Maintaining quality across so many dishes is a pretty awesome feat.

Kid-Friendly: 5/5

Gettin' all sugared up!

It's not just that there's a Mickey Mouse pancake, it's that it's a FANCY-LOOKING Mickey Mouse pancake! There's a few different options for kids' meals, and the cooks here know how to present the food to make the littles smile. It was a nice touch that during our visit the sprinkles were Christmas colors to complement the festive decor. My kids were even willing to eat the leftovers the next day - sometimes a hard sell - because they still looked like fun.

Would Eat Again?: Green Light

It's a selling point for us that this restaurant is a good stopping place if we're driving from Kokomo to do stuff in Fort Wayne. It's also just... it's fun. It's nice to go to a restaurant that's willing to be quietly fun while providing customers with a quality dining experience. We saw folks of all ages in there, so there's something for everyone!
